Accessibility statement

This site is built to WCAG 2.1 AA. Here is what was tested, what passed, and what has not been tested yet.

How accessible this website is

This site is intended to conform to WCAG 2.1 level AA. Accessibility was built in rather than retrofitted, and it is tested automatically on every build rather than checked once at the end.

What has been done

  • Every colour combination checked against WCAG contrast requirements, including text over photography, which was measured against the actual rendered pixels rather than estimated
  • Automated testing with axe-core across the whole rule set, at 390px and 1440px, on every build
  • Full keyboard operation — every control reachable and usable, with a visible focus indicator on every ground
  • A skip link to the main content
  • Semantic landmarks and a logical heading order on every page
  • Real alt text on every photograph, describing what is in the frame
  • Touch targets of at least 44px, with primary actions larger
  • Width and height on every image, so the page does not shift as it loads
  • Motion limited to short fades, and disabled entirely when the browser requests reduced motion
  • A mobile menu that traps focus while open, closes on Escape, and returns focus where it came from
  • Text that reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 320px

What has not been tested yet

Being straight about this matters more than a clean statement. Automated testing catches perhaps a third of accessibility problems. Still outstanding:

  • Testing with real screen readers — NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver
  • Testing with users who have access needs
  • Testing at 200% and 400% browser zoom
  • Any documents added later, such as certificates in PDF form, which need their own accessibility work
